004 // Video - Action // In which Sora makes a friend

[Hey there, Vatheon! Time for a homely little broadcast of a cozy looking ... stable? Since when did Vatheon have horses? Must be new. The screen pans slowly, revealing a vast open field, bordered by a rickety white fence. Sora's voice speaks off screen:]

Hey guys- check out what showed up at Nostalgia Nook!

[And then woa! Fluffy yellow feathers invade the screen. The SFC shakes as the person holding it begins to laugh. Sora swivels the SFC on himself. His hood is caught in the beak of a rather large bird. Behind him are several more, nearly twice Sora's height and scattered throughout the field.]

They're called Chocobos. Some are pretty friendly. The guy at the stable? He says I can have one if I take good care of it! [Another Chocobo head bobs into the screen, nibbling at the end of a spike of Sora's hair. He doesn't seem to mind.] You can even ride them, but you gotta train em' first.

Oh. And when you sing, sometimes they'll dance. Watch!

[The screen swivels around, squaring on an unassuming Chocobo several yards ahead. Sora clears his throat, and begins to whistle a tune. The bird in question quirks its head at the SFC and surprise, surprise, it actually begins to dance! It bobs, sways, rolls its head, warking rather excitedly, drawing attention of other ones nearby who more or less begin to do the same.]

[Just when things start getting interesting, that's when it all stops: there's a loud, irritated wark right behind the SFC. Sora has halted his musical performance and the screen has wandered away from the dancing chocobo as if Sora has become distracted offscreen. Could be trouble...]

Uhh.... hey there... You want some greens, is that it?

I'm sure I've got some around here. Hang on a sec....H-hey!

Wait, what're you - Oh no!!

[The screen finally jerks around, catching a flash Sora being tugged backwards, his hood caught in the beak of a rather irate looking bird. The broadcast stops.]

It's Sora, Karkat. And here.

[Nope. No petting or riding. That'd likely end in disaster. instead, Sora holds out a strange looking plant in Karkat's direction, one which immediately catches the bird's attention.]

I already know your name, dumbass. [He's just rude. Constantly.]

[But what's this plant? He eyes it and Sora, then the Chocobo watching it. He's skeptical, but when it looks like the bird isn't going to bite off Sora's hand or the like, he finally takes it himself.]

What do I do with it?

[A sigh. Sora figured as much. Still, he presses on.]

Gysahl greens. Chocobos love that stuff.

[The bird shifts behind Sora. It warks. Anticipating.]

Go on. Try feeding it.

"Gysahl greens"? Weird ass name.

[Still, Karkat... actually gives it a try for once. So much for coming here just to punch Sora, and it actually appears that goal's been forgotten and abandoned. So, turning warily to the Chocobo, he holds up the plant.]

[The Chocobo takes no heed of his wariness. It strides right up to him and dips its head down, ripping off about half of the Gysahl green, leaving just enough in Karkat's hand to warrant a second attempt if he wanted.]

See? That wasn't so bad.

And would it seriously kill you to call me by my actual name?

[He still has his fingers. That's good! So he goes ahead and holds up the other half, even as he glares back over his shoulder.]

Sora. Sora, Sora, Sora. Now shut up.

Gee thanks.

[Knowing this guy's going to be interesting, that's for sure. Still cranky about everything, but it's an improvement over the cursing. Take what you can get, right?]

[Speaking of fingers, Sora's eyes widen.]

Uh... Karkat?

[He motions past the troll where the Chocobo has moved in to finish the rest of that green. Unfortunately, it's gotten a little overzealous and taken Karkat's entire hand inside its beak. It's probably not painful... just... kind of scary to watch.]

[Always angry, all the time, man. Karkat's an asshole even to his best friend.]

[But speaking of cursing? There. His hand in the beak. That warrants it. Then again, it takes very little to set him off.]

Jegus fucking damnit christ! Let go of me you fucking brainless flapbeast!

[He... might just be able to pull his hand back. But what if it bites down? WHAT IF THE BEAK SCRATCHES HIM? He can't. He simply cannot do it. So he just keeps yelling.]

If this thing doesn't bite my hand off I am PUNCHING YOUR DAMN FACE IN, SORA!

H-hang on!

[Sora to the rescue! ... Though it looks like the bird isn't letting go very easy. Still, there's got to be a way to pry open its beak without having to stick his fingers in there. ~~What? Karkat may have his hand stuck in there, but Sora's not about to put his in too.~~ Instead, he tries pulling its head back and away from Karkat's hand.]

[He speaks as he struggles:] Punching me in the face isn't very good incentive for me to help you, you know!

[Karkat keeps his hand relatively still, only moving it as much as needed when the Chocobo tilts or turns its head. He is not going to let himself get scratched, damnit. ~~And if he does prepare for a massive freakout.~~]

[But in the meanwhile? Sorry, Sora. Karkat's a jerk through and through.]

Fuck you! You're the jackass who made me come out here to see the damn things! Calling me afraid of them? Real fucking mature. And now this damn thing is trying to eat me!

It's not like I planned this! How was I supposed to know it ate trolls?

[He'll come to learn eventually. For now he'll just... try not to flinch every time Karkat curses. He tugs the Chocobo a little farther back.]

Try pulling out your hand. Might get a scrape or two, but you'll keep your fingers.

You gave me that damn plant to feed it!

[But pull his hand out? And risk scrapes? Fuck no, man.]

It's your fault; yet get the damn thing off me.

It's never done that to me before. Gimme a sec-

[Finally, after another tug, the Chocobo opens its beak, releasing Karkat from its grip. Sora loses his hold and stumbles a few steps back.]

Woa!

[The Chocobo shakes its head, and then preens the feathers under a wing.]

[FREEDOM!! Karkat snatches his hand back as soon as the beak is open, covering with his other one, pinning it against his torso. Is it scraped or scratched even after making Sora get the beak off him? He's not entirely sure, but he's not going to risk looking when Sora might see.]

Fucking stupid ass flapbeast. Remind me to never listen to you again.

[Great. Now he'll never get this guy to do anything.]

[More importantly though:] Still got all your fingers?

Yes, I have my fingers.

[He still won't show Sora his hand, though.]

What did you even want me to come here for, anyway?

You sure you're not hurt? [Oh yeah. He sees that. He's going to lean sideways a juuuust a smidgen to try and get a better look from where he stands.]

I dunno, it just seemed like a fun idea at the time.

BACK THE FUCK OFF!

[He's backing up himself, against the fence, pressing his hand against his chest more while simultaneously trying to cover it better.]

Hey! Now you're just being rude. [Ruder than usual anyway, what with all the name calling again. He's got no idea why Karkat's so freaked out all of a sudden. First he's complaining about getting hurt and now he won't even let Sora help? What's with this guy?]

[Jamming his hand under the hem of his shirt, other hand still over it in case there is a scratch - wouldn't want any blood seeping through.]

Deal with it, nooklicker. You can't see. I don't need you to fucking heal shit; I've walked off three stab wounds just fine before. I am not and have never been the pink wriggling monkey you call an earth human baby, either, so fuck off.

[He doesn't even know what a nooklicker is, but it sounds like something his mother would smack him for saying.]

[Still not getting why it's such a big deal. In fact, Sora's starting to just think he's just paranoid. Now Sora's feeling a little testy too.]
