004 // Video - Action // In which Sora makes a friend

[Hey there, Vatheon! Time for a homely little broadcast of a cozy looking ... stable? Since when did Vatheon have horses? Must be new. The screen pans slowly, revealing a vast open field, bordered by a rickety white fence. Sora's voice speaks off screen:]

Hey guys- check out what showed up at Nostalgia Nook!

[And then woa! Fluffy yellow feathers invade the screen. The SFC shakes as the person holding it begins to laugh. Sora swivels the SFC on himself. His hood is caught in the beak of a rather large bird. Behind him are several more, nearly twice Sora's height and scattered throughout the field.]

They're called Chocobos. Some are pretty friendly. The guy at the stable? He says I can have one if I take good care of it! [Another Chocobo head bobs into the screen, nibbling at the end of a spike of Sora's hair. He doesn't seem to mind.] You can even ride them, but you gotta train em' first.

Oh. And when you sing, sometimes they'll dance. Watch!

[The screen swivels around, squaring on an unassuming Chocobo several yards ahead. Sora clears his throat, and begins to whistle a tune. The bird in question quirks its head at the SFC and surprise, surprise, it actually begins to dance! It bobs, sways, rolls its head, warking rather excitedly, drawing attention of other ones nearby who more or less begin to do the same.]

[Just when things start getting interesting, that's when it all stops: there's a loud, irritated wark right behind the SFC. Sora has halted his musical performance and the screen has wandered away from the dancing chocobo as if Sora has become distracted offscreen. Could be trouble...]

Uhh.... hey there... You want some greens, is that it?

I'm sure I've got some around here. Hang on a sec....H-hey!

Wait, what're you - Oh no!!

[The screen finally jerks around, catching a flash Sora being tugged backwards, his hood caught in the beak of a rather irate looking bird. The broadcast stops.]

Weren't you listening? She's a backstabbing psychopath. What more reason do you need?

I haven't seen her around here, but I can check on the SFC list for you.

[And Sora fiddles with his SFC for a few moments as he scrolls through a list. Then he shakes his head.]

No... she's not here in Vatheon. If she was, she'd be on the registry. Sorry, Yuna.

[Oh, good, these time paradox things are kind of unpredictable. At least Sora didn't seem to have come here from point Castle Oblivion, when he would have really had a good reason to hate him.]

Yep, it's me. Surprised?

[He quirks his mouth when the kid gets tugged halfway out of the picture, and then rubs his chin.]

Seems to me a really big cat might be handy in this situation.

[The bird isn't prepared for the sudden shift in weight, and the two of them practically go into a nose dive towards the ground. The Chocobo just narrowly saves them a hard fall with some frantic footwork.]

...I get that a lot.

But I can be really scary when I have to be! It's part of my Demon Lord training; Eclipse shows me how!

Maybe a little?

[This particular Chocobo isn't respecting his authority and leadership skills. Maybe some feminine charm and intuition (or greens!) is needed here.]

_{[This is possibly the reason Lea's parents didn't let him have pets.]}

C'mon! I said calm down, yeesh...

_{[Inch by little wiggling inch, he tries to slink back down to the Chocobo's back. He's whistling as he does so, hoping it does something to calm it down. Birds like whistling, right?]}

Maybe the first time you got here. [Second time around is... just sort of strange. Still, no matter what time Axel comes from, Sora still isn't any closer to understand the guy. Not really.]

[He moves back on screen, though suffers a little tug by the jacket.] Axel, lemme ask you something.

[Sora pulls out another small batch. He's only got a few more of these on him, so they'd better make it count.]

Mmm... how about we try feeding one. You know, just pick one and go for it.

[A pause.]

Any one except 'Loki.'

Excited? It looked more like it wanted to eat you.

[He notices Sora looking around for something and starts to look around himself, until he realized the irate Chocobo was probably hungry. He grabs a bucket full of greens from the other side of the fence and dumps them on the ground, separating each variety into different piles.]

[Uh... the man who ran the stable said each green garnered different effects. That one increased intelligence... this one was similar to a Cura spell and... or was it that one? Hm...

As Roxas pondered over which one to give the Chocobo, he failed to notice all the other hordes of the birds shuffling around him slowly but stealthily like a predator, tilting their heads at the pile of heavenly greens on the grass. It was probably snack time.]

[An exaggerated sigh.] Man, I really wish I could have been here the first time I was here. Being the second mouse just kind of takes all the fun out of it.

[Don't worry, Sora, it's not like he makes it easy to understand him.

He watches a moment as Sora fights against the pull of the chocobo, and then shrugs one shoulder.]

Fire away.

That's not a good reason at all! You can't just going around killing people..

[Unfortunately (or fortunately for Sora), his brand of psychopaths are several steps below Karkat's. Sora's never even seen anyone die. Never seen anyone killed. Not really.]

Who is she?

[Better to find out now and warn Riku and Kairi to stay far, far away.]

He trains you to be scary? How's that working out?

[Sora's nearly caught up by now, most of the other panicked birds well out of trampling range. He looks up just in time to see Lea's Chocobo finally starting to settle down. It's still a far cry from calm, but considering the panicked state it was in before, it's definitely an improvement.]

Not like you missed much. Except ... Roxas and Xion took it pretty hard when you left. So stick around a little longer this time, would you?

[Actually, Sora knows Axel doesn't really have a say in whether he stays or goes. Vatheon is fickle. It just feels right to say it.]

Anyway, what's the last thing you remember?

_{[Feed one? Demyx simply stares at Sora as if he had something on his face.]}

How?

So I heard. I think I'm flattered~ [A big grin here, but it's not quite so sly as is perhaps usual. He sort of meant that.] I'll see what I can do. I mean, it's not like I've got much to go back to.

[Oh, well, that might actually answer your question, Sora. But in case it doesn't, have a cryptic answer, just in case you don't remember this part yet:]

Oh, you know, something about princesses and dungeons and other things my heart just ain't quite in.

_{[And Lea's noticed. His grip hasn't much loosened, but now he's looking around a little bit, still whistling. He stops only to beam at Sora.]}

Heya!

[Sora's expression lightens, loses some of the wariness. He's mildly surprised, even.]

You're the one who helped me.

[The Axel before now, Sora wouldn't trust for anything. He's not exactly about to relax around Axel, but at least it's better than before]

[Sora sees what you're doing, Roxas.] Nice one! [Better it eat the greens than his jacket.]

[Unbeknown to the pair, a strange silence has fallen over the field. First, there's one curious whistle. Then another. Then several more. There's soft shuffling noises as one or two shuffle over, followed by others, all of them increasing their pace until finally, Sora looks up and sees the terrible fate about to befall them.]

Uh... Roxas... M-maybe we should try something else...

It's easy! You just walk right up to em' and...

Actually, I'm not sure. I've never done it before.

You know, Lea. If you wanted to ride one, you could've just asked.

[He's sure the keeper's got tamer ones completely okay with having some crazy redhead on their back. Did he really have to jump this one? The Chocobo shuffles restlessly in place, warking testily.]

Just walk up to one, huh?

_{[Well, it couldn't hurt to try! Let's see...]}

But isn't the Chocobo h-- [he looks up.] ...ungry.

[And such a terrible fate indeed, for the two witnessed an army of fowl surrounding them in a blockade with no where to run. Eep. He'd thought the Chocobos only ate vegetables, so what was their problem? Roxas then stared down at his pile, realizing too late his fatal mistake. He grabbed for one of the Gysahl Greens in an attempt to throw one out in the open to divert their attention.

A loud screechy wark. He took his hand off. Silence. He grabbed for it again. A chorus of angry squawks.]

[...Well, fudge.]

Chocobos... Weird name. What the hell are they doing here?
