004 // Video - Action // In which Sora makes a friend

[Hey there, Vatheon! Time for a homely little broadcast of a cozy looking ... stable? Since when did Vatheon have horses? Must be new. The screen pans slowly, revealing a vast open field, bordered by a rickety white fence. Sora's voice speaks off screen:]

Hey guys- check out what showed up at Nostalgia Nook!

[And then woa! Fluffy yellow feathers invade the screen. The SFC shakes as the person holding it begins to laugh. Sora swivels the SFC on himself. His hood is caught in the beak of a rather large bird. Behind him are several more, nearly twice Sora's height and scattered throughout the field.]

They're called Chocobos. Some are pretty friendly. The guy at the stable? He says I can have one if I take good care of it! [Another Chocobo head bobs into the screen, nibbling at the end of a spike of Sora's hair. He doesn't seem to mind.] You can even ride them, but you gotta train em' first.

Oh. And when you sing, sometimes they'll dance. Watch!

[The screen swivels around, squaring on an unassuming Chocobo several yards ahead. Sora clears his throat, and begins to whistle a tune. The bird in question quirks its head at the SFC and surprise, surprise, it actually begins to dance! It bobs, sways, rolls its head, warking rather excitedly, drawing attention of other ones nearby who more or less begin to do the same.]

[Just when things start getting interesting, that's when it all stops: there's a loud, irritated wark right behind the SFC. Sora has halted his musical performance and the screen has wandered away from the dancing chocobo as if Sora has become distracted offscreen. Could be trouble...]

Uhh.... hey there... You want some greens, is that it?

I'm sure I've got some around here. Hang on a sec....H-hey!

Wait, what're you - Oh no!!

[The screen finally jerks around, catching a flash Sora being tugged backwards, his hood caught in the beak of a rather irate looking bird. The broadcast stops.]

[He still has his fingers. That's good! So he goes ahead and holds up the other half, even as he glares back over his shoulder.]

Sora. Sora, Sora, Sora. Now shut up.

O-okay!

[And he turns the SFC off.

And sometime later (it took him a while, okay?) he found his way over to the place Sora told him about. Clank clank clank goes his shaky robot feet.

IT'S STILL HARD TO WALK. But he still gets there, somehow without falling ~~yet~~]

Uhhh, hi!

[Luckily for Olette, there's a container just inside the stable filled with Chocobo feed, even a convenient bucket for her to carry the stuff around in.]

[Meanwhile, Sora tries to follow, but his efforts are foiled by the bird in question who ends up pulling him back into the corral before he can climb all the way over.]

Really, Integra- She's not! She just wants to help. I mean, I have a bunch of friends who are girls. It's not just Ema, you know.

[Ohoho- you are a quick one. But the Chocobo will not be deterred. Once pushed away, it just shakes its head and goes in for another attempt.]

[And Sora waits. Truth be told, he doesn't mind. She's still finding her way around and it's not like they're pressed for time. Hopefully she remembers how to get to the plaza. The longer he waits though, the more he really starts to think Yuna's lost. Uh oh...]

[He's just about worried enough to go searching for her when she calls to him. Sora turns and smiles, relieved.]

Yuna! There you are.

Um... Oh, right. [He shuffles around his pack for a moment but finds nothing. On a side note, Sora could draw the animals back on Destiny Islands! But he's sort of a terrible artist so... maybe it's better he doesn't.] Well that's okay. I haven't got anything on me.

[Oh man. He's so tempted to ask him tips on how to ride.]

[Knowing this guy's going to be interesting, that's for sure. Still cranky about everything, but it's an improvement over the cursing. Take what you can get, right?]

[Speaking of fingers, Sora's eyes widen.]

Uh... Karkat?

[He motions past the troll where the Chocobo has moved in to finish the rest of that green. Unfortunately, it's gotten a little overzealous and taken Karkat's entire hand inside its beak. It's probably not painful... just... kind of scary to watch.]

... I don't have a brother.

[Always angry, all the time, man. Karkat's an asshole even to his best friend.]

[But speaking of cursing? There. His hand in the beak. That warrants it. Then again, it takes very little to set him off.]

Jegus fucking damnit christ! Let go of me you fucking brainless flapbeast!

[He... might just be able to pull his hand back. But what if it bites down? WHAT IF THE BEAK SCRATCHES HIM? He can't. He simply cannot do it. So he just keeps yelling.]

If this thing doesn't bite my hand off I am PUNCHING YOUR DAMN FACE IN, SORA!

[He nods. That makes a lot of sense! He files that information away for later- he's pretty sure it'll come in handy.]

Okay. Thanks!

But what if touching them isn't the problem. What if the problems that they won't stop touching you?

[He demonstrates by moving the camera until the Chocobo is on screen again. This time it's got its beak hooked onto the end of Sora's glove, nibbling the fabric. It doesn't look to be letting go.]

[Seeing Sora, Yuna jumps and runs over to him (as best as she can in that kimono-skirt she's wearing). And when she reaches him, she bows apologetically.]

I'm sorry for making you wait!

[Still feeling a little embarrassed at her late arrival, she holds out the small bag of items she collected]

I... I didn't know if you'd be hungry. So I brought a snack. These are for you.

Would it really kill you to be a little nice?

You have to start teaching them on how to tell what you don't want them to do as well. If you don't want him to do that, just gently push head away and say "no."

Try not to keep switching your sentence like, "don't do that," or "stop it," because it will only confuse them further. They can't understand our language, after all. It's our job to teach them to understand.

"No," will do just fine. Keep saying it until it gets the idea that you don't like it. If he did it right, make sure to reward him. They'd learn faster that way and grow closer to you faster too.

[Dun. Dun. DUN!]

Who was that little kid that looks just like you?

[Sora is teetering on one foot, the same side the Chocobo's trying to get into. Oh man, he hopes you know what you're doing, Axel. It is a big bird, and really doesn't want either of them losing a hand. Hard to talk, explain, even answer questions like this.]

Oh man... there's gotta be something else around here that it likes more than my stuff-

[Sora begins to hobble forward, looking around the stable for some feed or greens- anything. It's a goofy sight.]

[And true to his word, Sora's by the stable, sitting on the fence outside. Two Chocobos are hovering near him inside the corral. He turns at the noise and waves at Tavros.]

Hey there!

Almost thought you got lost or something.

H-hang on!

[Sora to the rescue! ... Though it looks like the bird isn't letting go very easy. Still, there's got to be a way to pry open its beak without having to stick his fingers in there. ~~What? Karkat may have his hand stuck in there, but Sora's not about to put his in too.~~ Instead, he tries pulling its head back and away from Karkat's hand.]

[He speaks as he struggles:] Punching me in the face isn't very good incentive for me to help you, you know!

[Karkat keeps his hand relatively still, only moving it as much as needed when the Chocobo tilts or turns its head. He is not going to let himself get scratched, damnit. ~~And if he does prepare for a massive freakout.~~]

[But in the meanwhile? Sorry, Sora. Karkat's a jerk through and through.]

Fuck you! You're the jackass who made me come out here to see the damn things! Calling me afraid of them? Real fucking mature. And now this damn thing is trying to eat me!

[He just stares for a moment. Wow. He knew Yuna was a lot bigger than she was before, but seeing her in person just cements it. Woa. He shakes his head.]

Don't sweat it. I wasn't waiting long.

For me? Thanks! [He accepts it with a grateful smile.] Sorry I didn't bring you anything.

So... lemme get this straight. [He eyes the bird with all this advice in mind.] If I wanna tell him what's right and wrong, I've gotta tell him 'No' when he does something bad. And give him a treat when he does something good?

[Sora just turns his head a little at the camera, and motions to himself.]

It's not like I planned this! How was I supposed to know it ate trolls?

[He'll come to learn eventually. For now he'll just... try not to flinch every time Karkat curses. He tugs the Chocobo a little farther back.]

Try pulling out your hand. Might get a scrape or two, but you'll keep your fingers.

You gave me that damn plant to feed it!

[But pull his hand out? And risk scrapes? Fuck no, man.]

It's your fault; yet get the damn thing off me.

[She catches the staring, which surprises her a little. But she waves off his apology with a smile]

It's okay! I know that being with chocobos can be a real work-out. [Poor, poor Clasko. She suppresses a giggle. But the idea of seeing the familiar yellow birds excites her once more.]

Shall we go, Sora?
