004 // Video - Action // In which Sora makes a friend

[Hey there, Vatheon! Time for a homely little broadcast of a cozy looking ... stable? Since when did Vatheon have horses? Must be new. The screen pans slowly, revealing a vast open field, bordered by a rickety white fence. Sora's voice speaks off screen:]

Hey guys- check out what showed up at Nostalgia Nook!

[And then woa! Fluffy yellow feathers invade the screen. The SFC shakes as the person holding it begins to laugh. Sora swivels the SFC on himself. His hood is caught in the beak of a rather large bird. Behind him are several more, nearly twice Sora's height and scattered throughout the field.]

They're called Chocobos. Some are pretty friendly. The guy at the stable? He says I can have one if I take good care of it! [Another Chocobo head bobs into the screen, nibbling at the end of a spike of Sora's hair. He doesn't seem to mind.] You can even ride them, but you gotta train em' first.

Oh. And when you sing, sometimes they'll dance. Watch!

[The screen swivels around, squaring on an unassuming Chocobo several yards ahead. Sora clears his throat, and begins to whistle a tune. The bird in question quirks its head at the SFC and surprise, surprise, it actually begins to dance! It bobs, sways, rolls its head, warking rather excitedly, drawing attention of other ones nearby who more or less begin to do the same.]

[Just when things start getting interesting, that's when it all stops: there's a loud, irritated wark right behind the SFC. Sora has halted his musical performance and the screen has wandered away from the dancing chocobo as if Sora has become distracted offscreen. Could be trouble...]

Uhh.... hey there... You want some greens, is that it?

I'm sure I've got some around here. Hang on a sec....H-hey!

Wait, what're you - Oh no!!

[The screen finally jerks around, catching a flash Sora being tugged backwards, his hood caught in the beak of a rather irate looking bird. The broadcast stops.]

[It takes him about seven minutes, actually. He portals into the plaza and then pokes around until he finds the Nook, and from there it doesn't take him long to figure out where the giant chickens are. WARK is a pretty distinct call. He strolls casually into the stable to find Sora still wrestling with one of the oversized birds, and leans on the edge of one of the stalls to watch for a moment.

Then he stoops to pick up one huge golden feather from the floor and clears his throat, twisting the feather between his fingers.]

Man, I'd hate to be around when these guys molt.

[She softly laughs] It is! It's so big and there are so many levels. The cities where I come from aren't usually this big...

Is the plaza okay? It's the one place I know best.

Yeah, that was pretty fun! Especially the par- [......wat.] Um... Sora, I think you've got the wrong person or something. I was never your sidekick.

And if he says we can't, I'll... uh... [What to do? He didn't want to lie to Eclipse. But Sora was super fun and kind of cool, even if he didn't get scared easily.] I'll tell him that we have to be friends anyway! He'll come around soon enough.

[He grins a little.] My mistake. [Only not. He'll let Raenef figure that one out on his own.]

Sounds good to me. We'll just have to get on his good side. If not you can always use your scary voice.

... I asked if you did, didn't say I'd be the one giving it.

[Well, Yuri has every intention to, he's just messing with the boy. Now that he thinks about it though, Yuri has uh... experience talking to a dog, but not a giant fluffy bird. Oh well, he's trying anyway. Taking some cautious steps, he's trying to get a feel for the giant chicken's personality first.]

It's all right. Animals or monsters are usually curious... At least, from how I know them as.

[there is a small pause at the second question, but only because he's starting to lightly blush! yeah, he really does love animals... it's always a good topic for him.

smile!!] ... Well, I'd like to think I am. [///] I love them a lot.

[It's kind of hard to punch the guy through the fence, so Karkat settles for glaring at him, lower eyelid twitching with irritation. And with the Chocobo, the whole situation just looks so stupid.]

Fuck you for making me come out here. Now do I have to climb over this damn fence or are you satisfied yet that I'm not afraid of a fucking featherbeast?

[Raenef laughs] Yeah, you've got it all wrong, Sora. I was the sidekick of a cute, little kid with funny hair and a stick! Not a Sora-kid with funny hair. [Obviously. Sora didn't even have a fighting stick!] He was fighting the invisitible monsters. [Whatever that meant...] Hope he's okay...

Eclipse always listens to my scary voice! Well usually. When he's not laughing...

Sure you are. Does she believe in Santa, too?

[ The heiress chuckles, before setting her sights on the Chocobo standing directly behind her friend. ]

...Are you sure you don't have anything that it wants? Perhaps that's why it's following you around, hm?

[Well, Yuri, Sora totally falls for it.]

You mean you're just gonna leave me here?

[The Chocobo turns its head questionably in Yuri's direction. It eyes him with a tilt of its head. He doesn't seem afraid or on edge at the slow approach. Not yet anyway.]

Got any advice? I could use some right about now. I dunno whether I should try and put my foot down or just bribe it with food until it listens to me.

Axel! There you are- [He stops talking to Axel to shove away the Chocobo's head. It's currently trying to nose its way into Sora's pack.] Come on, I already fed you all my greens. And you even ate one of my potions. What more do you want?

[What a landmark day. Sora's heard more cursing today than he's heard in 15 years. It's almost a little painful to hear. ~~Thanks Disney.~~]

A little sun's good for you!

Anyway, I believe you.

But you'll wanna climb over the fence anyway.

[Sora reaches up and pulls at one of his spikes. Funny hair, huh?] I wouldn't worry about him if I were you. If he can fight invisible monsters, I'm sure he'll be just fine.

Sounds like you had a lot of fun.

Sure she does! I mean... I think so. Why else would she help me prove it?

[He tilts his head in thought. And then shakes it.]

Anyway, this big guy right here ate one of my potions... Oh. I used to have some greens in my pack. But I fed it to some other Chocobo earlier, so I don't have any more. I can't figure why it keeps following me.

[The Chocobo lifts its head and peers at Integra with beady black eyes. It gives a single 'Wark.']

Because if she is your girlfriend, whether or not she believes in Santa wouldn't matter. She'd try and help you prove it, no matter what. I believe the term is 'true love'.

[ She arches a brow, listening intently as she just. Staaaaares at the Chocobo. ] I see. Well, he seems harmless enough...

No it's not. My species is nocturnal, fuckass, and the Alternian sun is dangerous for most.

[Poor Sora. Karkat has a mouth like a drunk troll sailor, and to think he's still not as bad as Gamzee.]

[Still, without much difficulty, the troll climbs up and over the fence, then hops down. He turns to face Sora... His mouth twitches, hand curling into a fist as his side... but he holds back from punching him just yet.]

So what the fuck do you want now? I'm not petting the damn things or riding one like a mechanical hoofbeast, if that's what you expect.

Oh! Right.

Uhh, hi S-sora! My name is...err...Tavros Nitram!

Yeah me too. I lived in a little place called Destiny Islands. Everybody knew everybody, it was so small.

And the plaza's fine. I'll be there in a few.

Sure. [he continued smiling, glad to help if he could!] But don't do any of that. They won't understand that you're angry until they get to know you more. And bribing them with food will only make them spoiled...

You have to treat them like a normal person, too. You have to slowly get to know them until you understand their behavior... Just like how it takes time to get to know someone. You can talk to them often and give them affectionate pats. Eventually, I'm sure they'll let you touch them further.

Mmm... I know the feeling. It's like you're never alone.

I'll be waiting, Sora!

[Offering a small smile, she turns the SFC off and heads toward the plaza. But not without getting a little sidetracked in the market. Does Sora want anything? Should she have brought something?] Managing the chocobos might have made him hungry...

I did. The kid was really fun! A little weird though, but fun. Actually, no. He was really weird. And silly. Who fights invisible monsters anyway? [Yeah, that kid was cuckoo for cocoa puffs] And he didn't seem to like that I was a Demon Lord.

...but he was nice. [He laughs] He kinda reminds me of you, Sora!

Unruly mounts act generally the same, so it was only a matter of experience.

[He's glad Sora is alright, though.]

Ah, right. My name is Flynn Scifo.

... Maybe he's hungry. Gimme a sec, I'll see if I can find something around here.

[Sora raises an eyebrow.] You think so?

Oh- maybe there's something inside the stable. They look like this-

[He pulls one of the greens out of his pack, which the bird promptly snatches up from his hand.]
