002 // Video - Action // in which Sora lets his ice cream melt

[So Sora's sitting on the steps in front of the Vita Apartments eating ice cream, but he doesn't seem all that interested in it. It's just sitting there, starting to melt all over his hand. He's lost in thought, looking frustrated, bordering on confused or annoyed.]

... I got a question...

Is anybody out there some kinda hero where they came from?

[He hesitates.]

Or anybody, really.

... How'd you end up figuring the good guys from the bad?

[There's a long pause. And then he just slumps.]

Yeah... mine's kind of almost gone anyway.

[She laughs.]

Great! Cheer up, okay? I miss the energy you had at the carnival.

You're outside Vita, right? I'm out and about right now anyway. Sit tight and I'll bring you some ice cream from the marketplace. Preferred flavor?

[She turns off the feed with a click! Not ten minutes later, she shows up with the promised ice cream and offers him one.]

[Sora scoots over on the stairs so she can sit down beside him. He's a few stairs up though, since his last ice cream's taking up his old spot.]

Thanks Saya.

[He doesn't quite start eating just yet. Just sort of stares at this one too.]

I mean it's not a big deal. Just been thinking, I guess. Things'd be so much easier if everybody just had this big sign over their head that told you to stay away from em'.

[She'll happily take that seat and unlike him, she more than happily begins eating her ice cream as she listens to him.

... that's some pretty heavy thinking for a kid his age. That concerns her a bit, but if she were to be somber too, it'd only bring him down more. So she smiles a bit as she answers.]

Why'd you ever want to stay away from anybody, Sora? Don't you like helping people?

I mean, I understand if it's not in your main list of priorities but... [A sheepish shrug.] I think meeting people - who can be described as both good and bad - is important.

Well yeah! I like helping people a lot! I like making all kinds of new friends and keeping them safe if they ever get in trouble. It's what I'm supposed to do, but I like doing it anyway.

That's my job where I come from, you know? Me and my friends- we chase down the bad guys and fix everything ... but...

[She laughs a little.]

That's good. You'd do well in my profession too- in which all you need is a genuine desire to help someone.

But... you know, you can help "bad guys" too.

[Sora blinks at Saya. That's... definitely a bit of a revelation. It's crossed his mind before, sure, but it's never really stuck until now.]

[She has to take a moment to laugh at him. That look of confusion is really cute.]

Well, it depends on the person. You know how everyone's allowed to make their own choices? I've found that sometimes people don't always make the right ones with their life.

You can't tell them how to live, Sora, but you can try to help them be a little bit happier if they're not satisfied with what they're doing. That's all.

[And therein lies the problem. He scratches his head, feeling even more lost than before. The clearer things get, the more confusing it becomes.]

What if... doing your job and keeping people safe... means that you can't let them be happy?

[She sighs.]

Try to reason with them. I always think that people deserve a chance to be saved. But if they don't take that chance and take other people's happiness...? [She shakes her head.] I'm not sure if there's anything you can do after that.

[He just looks at her. And then laughs.]

[There's a pause... and for the first time in their conversation, Sora finally has a go at his ice cream.]

... How do you know all this stuff, Saya?

[She thinks about it and then shrugs.]

I've had to think about it a lot. It's what happens when you want to help people. I try not to be picky about who I want to help, y'know?

Not to mention my best friend was really good at making me reevalutate things.

Yeah, I know how that feels. Too many people to help and not enough time.

[He spares her a side glance. He kind of likes it when she talks about her best friend. There's a fondness for her friend that Sora identifies with.]

Which is why you've just got to do what you can- as long as it makes you happy, of course.

[She laughs a little bit at the memory of Train.]

You have no idea. How about you, Sora? Got a few familiar friends around here?

A lot of familiar ones. But not all friends.

[Talking about the people he loves? This... cheers him up real well.]

Lucky I have Riku and Kairi with me, though. They're my best friends. We're always together- ever since we were kids. I guess even Vatheon knew we'd find each other again, huh?

[She has to take a moment to think about that. She'd never run into people who actually had those relationships, and it's not an idea she's familiar with. In the end, she laughs.]

Yep! Kairi came to the island when she was five so... [He pauses to count.] About twelve years? I think?

Jealous? But you have really good friends too, don't you? What about those guys you keep mentioning over and over. Sounds like you guys really understand each other.

[A tilt of her head.]

It's... not that many, actually. Just Train from back home, and...

[There's a really heavy pause here. She does have a best friend here, one that she understands and one who understands her unfairly well. But can she really acknowledge him that way? However after a few moments of silence, she just laughs.]

Someone around here is pretty good company, I guess.

Yeah. As many jerks there are around here, there's just as many helpful people too.

[Especially Luka. That was a little unexpected. He focuses on the treat in his hand. The ice cream's really pretty good.]
