Vanitas is Ven's darker half and Xehanort's apprentice. Due to the circumstances surrounding Vanitas' creation, he and Sora share the same appearance.
Sora and Vanitas have been in conflict since Sora was first ambushed on arrival in Siren's Port. Their first encounter left Sora mistakenly believing that he and Vanitas were the same, that he was in fact Sora years into the future, fallen to darkness. Later explanations from close friends revealed that they were not in fact the same person, and that Vanitas had been lying to him all along. Later still, Vanitas attacked Xion to lure Ventus to him, and merged with his other half in order to create the x-blade. He endangered the entire city until Roxas, Sora and Aqua teamed up to stop him. He returned weeks later as a dangerous Remnant which Sora eventually had to find and take down seeing as most of the others were out of commission.

Despite having every reason to hate him fully. Vanitas is an enigma, leaving Sora caught between writing him off as an irredeemable villain and genuinely searching for something decent in Vanitas. A part of him wants to believe there is good in him for Ven's sake. They they were once one person after all, weren't they? Even now, he is connected to Ventus in more ways than one. At the same time, it's difficult to believe they were one in the same. No one can fuel Sora's anger quite like Vanitas. Roxas also seems to share his suspicion and resentment, and Sora will trust Roxas over him every time. He's dangerous, and a bully and Sora won't trust him for anything.
